HOME Real Estate agents and staff helped to raise more than $2,000 during the fourth annual Soup or Chili Cook-Off for Cancer Wednesday in Lincoln.
The Chili Cook-Off raised $2,190 for the American Cancer Society through the voting beans and cookbooks sold. The group has raised a total of nearly $8,000 to date.
The People’s Choice Award (with the most beans) went to Donna Melichar of the HOME Real Estate Pine Lake office. Deb Wagner of the Woods Bros Realty Lincolnshire Square office won second place, and Regina Kastrup of the HOME North office won third. Voters were made up of HOME and Woods Bros agents and staff, along with staff from Nebraska Land Title and Abstract, HomeServices Lending, HomeServices of Nebraska Insurance and Larabee School of Real Estate.
This year the Celebrity Judge Award went to Karalyn Hoefer of the Wilderness Hills office for her Southwest corn chowder. Celebrity judges were Channel 8 Eyewitness News Anchor Rod Fowler, Country Club of Lincoln Executive Chef Lorin Dagel, and Miss Star City Kalyssa Hoefer.
“We’ve had a lot of cancer within our organization, and it’s just affected so many families, so many agents, that we wanted to do something,” HomeServices of Nebraska CEO Gene Brake said. “This was our way of participating and trying to help find a cure.”
The 2013 participants from HOME Real Estate were: Tracy Oehlerking, Cotner; Regina Kastrup, North; Betty Burback, Pioneer Greens; and Donna Melichar, Pine Lake. Connie Hain represented the Support Services office, and Samantha Kinnett and Mary Pro cooked for NLTA.

Let's put the HEAT on cancer
HOME Real Estate is gearing up for the fourth annual Soup or Chili Cook-off for Cancer Wednesday, February 27 at 11:30 a.m. at 3355 Orwell St. in Lincoln.
Celebrity guest judges this year are: Channel 8 Eyewitness News Anchor Rod Fowler, Country Club of Lincoln Executive Chef Lorin Dagel, and Miss Star City Kalyssa Hoefer. All of the proceeds go to the local American Cancer Society. The group raised about $1,200 in 2010, $1,700 in 2011, and $2,975 in 2012, with $1,840 going to the American Cancer Society and the remainder to support an agent’s transplant fund.
“Cancer has affected so many of our family of agents and employees that we wanted to find a way to support this worthwhile cause and put the heat on cancer,” said HomeServices of Nebraska CEO Gene Brake.
HOME agents and staff, along with staff from Nebraska Land Title and Abstract (NLTA), HomeServices Lending, HomeServices of Nebraska Insurance and Larabee School of Real Estate vote for their favorite soup or chili with purchased voting beans. The winning chef gets bragging rights and his/her name on the Top Chef plaque.

HOME Real Estate celebrated its top professionals at an awards banquet Feb. 7 at the Country Club of Lincoln.
Dan Mlnarik of the Pine Lake office was named 2012 Realtor of the Year, and Kylee Brown of the Pioneer Greens office was selected as Employee of the Year. Carla Waldbaum of the North office was the first recipient of the Steve Schleich Community Service Award.
Doug Hanna of the Pine Lake office earned the Top Overall Residential Producing and Top Overall Residential Selling Associate, while Terry Kraft of the Pioneer Greens office was the Top Overall Residential Listing Associate and Jeff Johnson of the Cotner office closed the most units.
Paul & Madonna Kardell of the Pioneer Greens office won the top Couple Awards for listing, selling and overall production, while Ann and Al Underwood from the Pine Lake branch office in Seward had the Most Units Closed by a Couple. The top Overall New Construction couple went to Lydi and Vladimer Gorbun, also of the Pine Lake office.
The Top Overall Producing Team and Most Units Closed by a Team awards went to the Bulow Team of the Pioneer Greens office.
Each office recognized agents in four different categories. Top Producers in each office were: Jeff Johnson, Cotner office; John Fink, North office; Doug Hanna, Pine Lake office; and Rhonda Dodson, Pioneer Greens office.
Newcomer of the Year awards went to Derek Busch at Cotner, Timothy Bayne at North, Lydi & Vladimer Gorbun at Pine Lake, and Vicki Cox of Pioneer Greens.
The Top New Construction Associates in each office were Noel Herrington, Cotner; Katie Bugbee, North; Donna Melichar, Pine Lake; and Terry Kraft, Pioneer Greens.
Finally, all the agents in each office voted for a fellow agent who best exemplifies the spirit of the office. Harry Rotthaus won the Agent Choice award from Cotner, Jeni Eitzman Meyer for North, Patti Whitbeck for Pine Lake and Jeanne Johnson for Pioneer Greens.
